SAE Week 12

Howdy,

This week at SAE we held an exhibition for all the work of this trimester at Loop bar in the city. It turned out that most of the projects that my company are working on couldn’t be displayed on the night, as although our contributions were complete the final products were not released. The one example that we did show was the CANA web episode complete with credits. We have shown this in a few stages of completion at the weekly progress presentations, and it was rewarding to see it all come together. The final mix was well balanced and certainly helped to carry the narrative of the picture.

Another project this week for a client of the film company is a list of foley sounds to be used in a student animation project. We had initially hoped to provide the final mix on this as well, but the animators have run late on their production and have not been able to give us a picture lock. To get the project done they have asked for the individual sound files and they will incorporate them into the soundtrack. The list included lots of quiet and recognisable sounds of a character using a laptop, interacting with a desk and chair, and a rainy atmosphere both interior and exterior

I took a literal approach to recording these, using a shotgun mic up close and using the same objects as those described by the director. I hope this will give a level of realism to the animated picture. Each sound has a choice of takes so that the director can match them to the pace on-screen. I think that the sounds themselves are quite good and I look forward to seeing the end result. Hopefully this can be included in the final showreel for the trimester.

Cheers!
