This week has been a little bit shorter after the Queen’s Bday weekend, and was mostly prep work for upcoming projects.
We have a tracking session in a few weeks at HeadGap using their tape machine and Neotek console, which will be a new experience for me. I’m looking forward to learning how the workflow is changed and what habits I have become accustomed to using DAWs. Our tute groups this trimester are in groups of 5 which seems to be a lot better in terms of each person having a hands-on role to play and taking ownership of the project. We have 5 hours to set up the session, track the band and transfer the tape to Protools. I think there’s heaps to be done and there won’t be a spare moment.
Also this week was the first of a series of guest lectures with copyright lawyer Julian Davis. This was very eye-opening and surprisingly interesting, especially coming from someone who has direct experience in the sound industry – he was able to put these ideas into context that is familiar to us. Learning the basics of business structure has made a number of things much clearer to me. I remember being told about these things in previous studies but not really connecting them to my situation, so I’m glad that it’s being covered here.
I’m a little closer to the development of my major project idea. My initial concept was to create a 5.1 surround audio game, with the player as the central character in a situation or narrative. I now think that a linear narrative radio-play is more in line with my interests and will be a good folio piece that’s relevant to film and TV. There’s still lots of things to think about and I’ll add them here as it develops.
Thanks for reading!
